Today we know that many prominent organizations responsible for thousands of students, customers, or workers are located in areas of high seismicity. These organizations often preside over portfolios with seismically vulnerable buildings that pose significant life safety and financial risks if damaged. Even in cases where such organizations are aware of their seismic risk and have the means to do something about it, the prospect of building up resilience against the next big earthquake can be daunting, given the number of stakeholders involved, the engineering expertise required, and the time and budget constraints at hand. This presentation will cover one such resilience journey from an ongoing project and collaboration between Arup's Risk + Resilience and Structural teams in San Francisco. The speakers will highlight the technical and non-technical challenges involved in helping a real-world organization understand its seismic risk, develop a holistic resilience strategy, and implement the strategy in individual buildings.
